Carpet cleaners are not designed to dry vacuum carpet. They do not have the proper floor head design nor do they have filtration capable of capturing dry dust and dirt.

You will want to completely vacuum your carpet with a normal vacuum cleaner to remove topical hair and large particles. You then need to follow the manufacturer's instructions with the carpet cleaner and cleaning solutions.
