Oreck Steam Cleaner - The Steam-It Vapor Steam Cleaner ... More Than A Steam Mop

The new Oreck Steam Cleaner, called the Steam-It, is the latest in cleaning technology from Oreck. The Steam-It generates high temperature, low pressure steam that deeply penetrates dirt and grime without the use of harsh or environmentally unfriendly household cleaners. The advantage is powerful cleaning, without toxic residues.

The Steam-It is neither a vacuum nor a mop, and it’s more than a steam mop, it is a vapor steam cleaner, a high temperature, low moisture steam system. At temperatures up to 212º F, the steam is hot enough to reduce common household germs and bacteria such as e-coli, staph, and salmonella, without the use of sanitizers, as well as liquefy caked grease, oils, dirt, and debris so that surfaces can be wiped clean with a cloth.

The Oreck steam cleaner is easy to use, simply fill the reservoir with water, turn the Steam-It on, and in 30 seconds you’re ready to go. Clean nearly any surface in your home with the selection of included accessories. Steam-It cleans everything from tile, vinyl, and hardwood floors, to carpets, upholsteries, and fabrics. The Steam-It also cleans kitchen appliances, removing baked on spills and sanitizes counter tops. There are hundreds of jobs around the house that the Steam-It can tackle.

The Oreck steam cleaner floor head is designed to use any micro-fiber towel, which means you can purchase replacements anywhere, not just from Oreck. Because Steam-It is a vapor steam cleaner, it uses the power of plain water, not chemicals, further reducing your costs. It should be noted, however, that hard water will leave behind mineral deposits that can build up and reduce the steam output and efficiency of the Steam-It. Oreck has included two tools specifically designed to clean the orifices and prevent clogging. In most cases, it is best to use distilled water.

The Steam-It is light, weighing just 5.65 pounds, however, the floor head will bring the curb weight up to almost 7 pounds and a full tank of water increases that to 9.4 pounds. While this is still less than what the average vacuum cleaner weighs, the head doesn’t have any gliders or rollers to assist movement, so you will get a workout if you’ve got much floor area to clean. Most of the other accessories add very little weight to the Steam-It, the only variable will be the amount of water in the tank. For above the floor cleaning, we recommend only partially filling the tank if weight is a concern.

The Oreck steam cleaner floor head, while commendably designed with universal cleaning clips, it lacks the ability to hold cloths in place, the provided cloths are too small to easily install, and they shrink with use, making them difficult to keep in place. The Steam-It floor head has issues with staying in constant contact with the floor. It likes to kick up on its heel as it is drawn backwards. Overall, we like the Oreck Steam-It, and believe that these relatively minor flaws could be easily redesigned out in subsequent models.

The Steam-It accessory tips work well on many surfaces and the sealed pressure tank allows it to work in any position, even upside down. The 16′ cord does somewhat limit working radius and the Steam-It is a bit bulky in length making filling the reservoir and working in confined places difficult.

The Steam-It can be operated continuously with no need to power down the unit except to refill the tank, then it must be turned off and unplugged. Once refilled, the Steam-It will have steam ready again in 30 seconds.

The Steam-It heats fast and works great.

It is a bit bulky and difficult to use above floors and in tight spaces.

Oreck Steam Cleaner Consumer Reviews

  1. John adams says

When looking for a new steam cleaner, the Oreck seemed to have all the right features. A little pricey, but if it worked well then it is worth the price.

After the purchase, it heated up quickly. Didn’t leave a film that many of the steamers do leave. Cumbersome to fill with water. The cloth on the bottom is horribly designed. The Engineer must have been drunk and on drugs when he designed it. It just plain does not work. Cannot be fixed.

After a couple weeks after the purchase, the steamer started to perform poorly. After taking apart the head, we discovered a faulty part that was not engineered correctly. The faulty part is the connector nipple to the silicon tube. It breaks off inside the silicon tube. The steam will rarely reach the ports. Unless Oreck goes back and redesigns this product is not fit for the public.

If these two problems were fixed, this unit would get an excellent rating. But, right now you want to avoid this product.
