Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner Review

[myrpeditors]

After a few easy assembly steps, the Hoover Steam Vac is ready to use, simply add cleaning formula and water to the holding tank and start cleaning your carpet. The counter-rotating SpinScrub brushes work all sides of the carpet fiber simultaneously, making short work of carpet cleaning tasks. By following the instructions in the SteamVac manual, your carpets will only be lightly damp to the touch when you finish cleaning and fully dry within a few hours.

But first, let’s dispel a misconception about carpet steam cleaners in general. The term “steam cleaner” originated when the carpet cleaner industry was in its infancy, experimenting with different cleaning methods, including steam. Because results were less than spectacular, steam cleaning gave way to hot water extraction, which is what most of today’s consumer and professional-grade carpet cleaning machines are based on. However, the term “steam cleaning” stuck and it’s how the industry continues to describe hot water extraction carpet cleaners today.

Why is this important? Because many carpet cleaners on the market use some form of “steam” in their name, the Hoover SteamVac F5914 included, and consumers are understandably upset when they discover that their machine does not produce steam.

Overview

Hot water extraction consists of applying a hot cleaning solution to the carpet, agitating the solution through the carpet fibers, then extracting the solution, removing dirt and grime with it. It’s a simple process, however, not all carpet cleaners are created equal. The Hoover SteamVac F5914 900 carpet cleaner excels at hot water extraction carpet cleaning. With its counterrotating SpinScrub® brushes and strong suction, the SteamVac deep cleans and rejuvenates carpet fibers.

Assembly is easy, though care must be taken when inserting the handle that it aligns properly, otherwise the injection trigger won’t engage, resulting in leakage. Other than that, simply install a few screws and a couple brackets to hold the hose and tools onboard the SteamVac and you’re ready to get your carpet clean.

The tank on the Hoover SteamVac has a molded water fill line and the cap doubles as a cleaning formula measuring cup, making the filling process a breeze. Hoover includes a 16 ounce bottle of Deep Cleansing Formula concentrate with the SteamVac that makes three gallons of cleaning solution, enough to clean 100 to 200 square feet of carpet, depending on how liberally the solution is applied and how soiled the carpet is.

TIP: Place the Hoover SteamVac carpet cleaner on a hard, waterproof surface before servicing the solution and extraction tanks to make clean up of drips and accidental spills hassle free.

Performance

Our carpet tests ranged from zero traffic areas to moderate traffic to heavily soiled areas where pets lay. The SteamVac F5914 with its counter-rotating SpinScrub® brushes reduces user effort and the number of passes necessary to clean because the rotating brushes clean carpet fibers from all sides simultaneously. The trigger is comfortably placed and an adequate amount of cleaning solution is applied to the carpet. For heavily soiled areas, using the CleanSurge™ button will double the amount of cleaning solution injected into the carpet.

While there was no visible dirt in the zero traffic area, the extracted liquid proved otherwise. The moderate traffic area was noticeably dirty, not only was this born out by the extraction, there was visual improvement after carpet cleaning. The pet area, dark with dirt and body oils, showed the least improvement, while the extraction was productive, there was only slight visual change to the area, even with pretreating. This likely had more to do with the cleaning solution than the carpet cleaner itself. Over the course of testing several carpet cleaners and their respective cleaning solutions, the pet area was completely cleaned and revitalized. There were several areas where pet vomit or accidents had occurred, these stains were completely removed by the SteamVac F5914. With the optional bare floor accessory the SteamVac cleans a multitude of bare floor surfaces as well. The test model that Hoover sent us was not equipped with this option.

Overall, the performance of the Hoover SteamVac F5914-900 carpet cleaner is good. What impressed us most was the suction and how dry the carpets were after cleaning. If you work the carpet cleaner until you no longer see visible swirls of water being drawn up the nozzle, the carpet will be only slightly damp to the touch and can be completely dry within a few hours. The SteamVac is easy to use and large enough to clean an entire house full of carpet, yet small and lightweight enough that it can be used for everyday spot cleaning, pet accidents, traffic area maintenance, or cleaning hard floor surfaces. The hose and attachments allow for cleaning of stairs, upholstery, vehicle and RV interiors, and more.

Please note, that if you’re looking for the Hoover Steam Vac and Road Rat vacuum combo, the Road Rat comes with the Hoover Steam Vac All-Terrain, not the F5914.

Complaints

These are minor things that aren’t necessarily criticisms, though warrant mentioning. The handle of the SteamVac F 5914 has sharp ridges running down the sides that cause blisters, the ridges can be filed off, though it would be nice if they weren’t there to begin with. The design of the handle and trigger location is great when you’re injecting solution onto the carpet, but there isn’t enough room to comfortably grasp the handle for the drying strokes, causing a bit of fatigue in the hand and wrist due to a "three fingered" grip. The handle release and ON / OFF foot switches are on opposite sides of the carpet cleaner, obscured by the hose, and awkward to use. Both pedals would be better located on the back of the machine. We also don’t like how the handle has to be laid to the floor to service the recovery tank, it is an awkward and cumbersome design.

When it comes to cleaning the Hoover SteamVac after use, the floor nozzle is sealed, preventing access for cleaning, and the tank lid has hollow moldings that prevent good cleaning. The recovery tank itself is full of deep nooks, crannies, and baffles that make cleaning difficult as well. Now, none of these things affect the function of the carpet cleaner, but it is unsightly and you’re not going to like it if you’re a neat-nick like we are. There is a “cleaning” tool, however, this is for clearing clogs within the nozzle, not for actual cleaning of the passageways.

Lastly, the application of spot treatment and carpet pretreatment perform better when worked into the carpet fiber, this would be facilitated if the carpet cleaner could be used in “brush only” mode, where the brushes were active without suction. Again, these are all relatively minor grievances.

Bottom Line

The Hoover SteamVac F5914-900 does a good job on light to moderately soiled carpets. The F5914’s SpinScrub brushes effectively loosen dirt and grime and revitalize carpet fibers. Its suction is superb, extracting spent cleaning solution and rinse water with ease, leaving the carpet only slightly damp to the touch.

The SteamVac F5914-900 is an excellent value. It performs very well and, at less than $200.00, you can’t beat the price. Consumer reviews of this carpet cleaner are overwhelmingly positive. Most users would wholeheartedly recommend this machine to others and would happily purchase it again.

The Hoover SteamVac F5914 can be purchased at a local retailer or online at Amazon.com. Amazon also carries many Hoover SteamVac carpet cleaning supplies, parts, and accessories.
