Necessity – The Mother of Invention
The Bissell Vacuum Cleaner legacy began when Anna Bissell complained to her husband that tiny, stubborn particles clung to the carpet, and trying to sweep them up was becoming a time-consuming nuisance. The Bissell Carpet Sweeper was born.
His ingenious carpet sweeper design was a success, and word spread quickly. People soon began asking where they could purchase a carpet sweeper for themselves, so the Bissell’s patented their invention in 1876 and began manufacturing the Bissell Carpet Sweeper in 1883.
Over the years, the company expanded beyond the carpet sweeper and introduced additional products that helped people clean better while saving time. Sweepers led to vacuum cleaners, and vacuum cleaners led to innovations like deep cleaners, on-board heaters, and micro-filtration technology.
In the 1950s, Bissell invented a new multi-purpose formula and shampooer that reduced the time involved in, and the drudgery of, carpet cleaning. Later, to meet the growth of smaller living spaces, Bissell introduced practical, lightweight cleaners that people could use quickly and store easily. And Bissell made deep carpet cleaning (once the exclusive domain of commercial providers) available to everyone with its introduction to the consumer market of the current carpet cleaners that feature a built-in heater to optimize performance.
Bissell and the Environment
Bissell has implemented an innovative closed loop manufacturing process that allows new vacuums and deep cleaning machines to be manufactured using post consumer recycled content. Bissell has been practicing recycling in its blow-molded bottle operations for over 40 years.
In 2005, Bissell created its “ForEverGreen Team” which is dedicated to implementing strategies to improve Bissell’s environmental practices in product design, packaging, logistics, and facility design and operations. The goal is to reduce Bissell’s impact on the global environment by identifying and implementing sustainability strategies.

This is Bissell’s water filtrated vacuum with 3 stage filtration. The water filtration stage captures and sinks large particles, including dirt, hair, and crumbs. Smaller particles are captured by the secondary filter, insuring that the Big Green Complete captures all the dirt and dust you vacuum up. Finally, the HEPA media filter cleans and filters the air before it leaves the machine.
