Bissell Lift Off Vacuum Cleaner Review

[myrpeditors]

While this review focuses on the Bissell Lift Off 89Q9 / 89Q92 vacuum cleaner, it is virtually identical to the Bissell Lift Off 18Z6. The 89Q92 is blue with standard attachments and sold by retailers everywhere, whereas the 18Z6 is red, includes the Bissell Shedaway™ Tool pet groomer, and is produced specifically for sale at Target stores. Other than their color and where they are sold, the vacuums themselves are identical.

First Impressions

Unpacking and assembling the Bissell 89Q9 is quick and easy. Assembly is intuitive, simply slide the handle into place on the vacuum’s chassis and install two screws. From there it is only a matter of installing the hose and onboard attachments. Total time from unboxing to using your new vacuum is less than 5 minutes.

The Bissell Lift-Off Multi-Cyclonic Pet Vacuum is a sleekly styled upright. Its Pacifica blue chassis with black and yellow accents makes its striking features boldly stand out. The 89Q9 gives you a sense that it is substantial, a feeling that is lacking in other vacuum cleaner brands in this class.

Controls are few and straightforward. On top of the detachable canister is an ON/OFF switch for main power and an ON/OFF switch for the brush roll. On the front of the floor head you will find a 7 position manual dial to adjust height anywhere from bare floors to deep pile carpet. The back of the floor head has a foot pedal release for the handle, which gives you full range of motion from the parked position to laying flat on the floor.

When you want to use the canister vacuum section independently of the upright vacuum chassis, Bissell has integrated a Grab&Go release into the handlebar of the canister vacuum. Simply grab the handlebar, squeeze the grip, and the canister comes free.

All of the attachments (extension wand, crevice tool, combination dust brush/upholstery tool, and turbo brush) are neatly stowed on the vacuum’s chassis and handle. This works well when using the vacuum as a whole unit, but is a little less convenient when you are using the canister vacuum away from the chassis.

Performance

The Bissell 89Q9 Lift-Off makes quick work of both carpets and bare floors. It picks up pet hair and fluffs carpet fibers nicely. As air is exhausted out through the HEPA media filter, it is diffused well, preventing the vacuum from disturbing dust bunnies that have yet to be gobbled up by this machine.

The 15″ wide pathway means you will make fewer passes to clean each room. Edge channels on each side of the floor head allow for edge cleaning. The 89Q9 also has a headlight for additional forward lighting. Although, we found it to be of little use.

We were pleasantly surprised by several things we did not expect to find on the 89Q9. There is a brush roll control switch for doing bare floor work, and the brush roll automatically shuts off when the vacuum is brought up into the parked position. This auto shut-off feature prevents damage to flooring when the vacuum cleaner is in the parked position while you are using the hose and wand above the floor, and, again, is a feature not commonly found on vacuum cleaners in this class.

Above Floor Work

Working with the canister vacuum attached to the upright vacuum chassis, you have a maximum reach of about 9 feet, more than enough to do most of your basic household cleaning. For those extra high places, stairs, and anywhere that the vacuum cleaner does not easily go, the Grab&Go Lift Off vacuum canister detaches from the vacuum chassis to become portable.

As a canister vacuum, the Lift Off weighs in at just under 11 pounds and gives you much more mobility than when using the vacuum as a whole. This smaller size makes the vacuum easier to use on stairs, bare floor surfaces, or tight spaces, and allows you to reach high or awkward places with ease.

All of the accessories attach easily. The crevice tool is a nice length to reach into tight areas, such as between appliances or picking up along baseboards. The combination upholstery/dust brush tool head swivels to direct suction to the needed part of the tool, both heads of this combo tool work well. The pet hair turbo brush works great on carpet, pet bedding, draperies, upholstery, and other fabrics. The face of the pet turbo brush has rubberized fingers to help attract and remove pet hair from nearly any surface. And finally, the extension wand extends from 16″ to 28″, or anywhere in between, its unique twist-lock collar keeping it firmly where you set it.

Maintenance

To remove the dust bin, slide the locking lever under the bin to the left, pull out the bin and empty into the garbage. Reset the bin into place and slide the locking lever to the right. It’s just that easy.

Servicing the filters on the Bissell Lift-Off is a quick and simple process as well. How frequently you need to service the filters will depend on the environment and the amount of use the vacuum cleaner sees. A heavy traffic environment with pets and kids will require more frequent servicing than a low traffic household. Once removed, the filters are simple rinsed under clean, running tap water.

The HEPA media filter is located behind a grill on the back of the vacuum canister. The HEPA media filter should be replaced every 6 months, as it is not washable.

Summary

Overall the Bissell Lift Off Multi Cyclonic Pet Vacuum works very well. It has good suction as both a standard upright vacuum and as a canister vacuum. Tools are neatly and conveniently stored onboard. Maintenance is straightforward, whether dumping the dust cup or servicing the filters.

I just got my new Lift -Off multi pet vacuum yesterday and could not wait to get it out of the box. I was ready to have problems putting it together from some of the reviews I read but that was not the case. Really didn’t even have to look at the manuel. Two screws and everything else just clicks into place. The first thing I did was my hardwood floors and then took off the canister and did my carpeted stairs. What a pleasure. My old canister vacuum did not have a stair attachment, the cord was not long enough as my stair case is a U shape with two landings. I would have to do them in sections. First the top, plugged in upstairs and then carry everything down and re-plug in downstairs and work my way back up. Hated the stairs. Now with my new vacuum the cord is long enough that I can vacuum part of the hall on the second floor. My stairs will be vacuum much more now. Also love having all the tools on board. My last canister I had to change the hose from carpet to hard surface also had to go and get attachments when I needed them. If it’s that much work your not always going to do the best job. The Crevice tool is long and narrow which is great for getting into the lint trap in the dryer. Also like the telescoping extension wand, make it whatever size you need. So looking forward to vacuum everything. The other nice feature is the dirt that I got up was the real fine stuff, that you see under your carpet when you are replacing it. The suction is great! Love my Vac!

  2. Nina Miranda says:

i got mine after watching your review. it’s strong; when the canister’s free standing, there’s a slight kick-back when you push the start button, so it’s gotta be held still. i have bare floors and furballs to the wazoo, so the ease of the telescoping tool combined w/the maneuverability of being able to lift off makes it worth every penny. i haven’t tried the other on board tools yet, but as a floor vac, it worked wonders on my carpet-welcome-mats w/brush function turned on.

  3. Nicole Kirby says:

I love my new Multi-Cyclonic Pet Vacuum. It is so easy to use and it really sweeps up the pet hair. I like the lift off canister also, I find it nice to have when doing hard to reach areas while vacuuming. I have no complaints about my new Bissell.

  6. Ben Wallace says:

We were SO impressed with this vacuum initially. The suction was fantastic and it picked up so much that our old vacuum had left behind. However, a black rubber gasket broke off of the bottom of the cyclone container. Now we have to clean out the cyclone after vacuuming for about 1 minute – all the dirt and pet hair stays there and no longer falls into the dirt canister. Sadly, there is no replacement gasket available so the vacuum is virtually useless. We only have one carpeted bedroom and two area rugs, the rest of our home has hardwood. With such little use we really expected this vacuum to last for many years as our previous one did.
